Front-page news, starring your cat

“The Daily Purr” runs across the top of the portrait page in a big blackletter masthead, with the date line in small gray capitals just below it. Under that, the headline spans the full width in tall condensed capitals: our example reads “EXTRA! Local Legend Turns 10”.

Your cat’s photo fills almost half the page, set center-left and printed in halftone dots like a real newspaper picture. The only color comes from a tiny pink party hat on your cat’s head and a red EXTRA rubber stamp that overlaps the top-right corner of the photo. An italic caption sits under the picture (“Ziggy celebrates with three naps”), and a narrow column of funny side stories runs down the right side. Ziggy is only our example: you add your own cat’s name in the “Cat’s name” box and the age and date in “Text on your gift”, and for a different caption, add a note for our designer. Photo tips for a front-page portrait

Pick a photo of your cat sitting and facing the camera, head and chest in view, with both ears showing so the party hat has somewhere to sit. Halftone loves contrast, so daylight from a window works better than a dim lamp, and a cat that stands out from the background prints best.
