This personalized cat rug settles a long-running household question: whose rug is it, really? A faded heirloom pattern with your cat in charge

The design is a generic vintage Oriental-style pattern rather than a copy of any particular tradition. A madder-red field is framed by a wide indigo-navy border with thin ivory guard stripes inside and out, and floral spandrels in saffron and faded teal fill the four inner corners. Soft printed fading across the whole rug gives it the gentle, lived-in look of a carpet that has seen a few generations of cats.

The large diamond medallion sits in the center, and your cat lies across it on its side, head up and front paws stretched forward, wearing the expression of a cat who has never once been asked to move. A small ivory cartouche under the medallion’s bottom point carries three lines: “The Cat’s Rug” in a classic engraved serif, “Humans Permitted” in red italic and your cat’s name in spaced capitals (“Ziggy” in our example). Photo tips for a lounging cat

The pose is a cat lying on its side with the head up, so a full-body photo of your cat stretched out on the floor or the sofa works best. Take it from slightly above at a short distance, with the whole tail in the frame and the face turned toward you.
